Before the Memories Fade: Presymptomatic Diagnosis of
Alzheimer’s Disease
Reisa Sperling, MD, MMSc,
Associate Professor of Neurology,
Harvard Medical School
Director, Center for Alzheimer Research and Treatment,
Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital
Brain changes thought to cause Alzheimer’s may begin a decade or more before the diagnosis of clinical dementia. Although further research is needed, this long “preclinical” phase opens a window to possible intervention with disease-modifying treatments. “As with heart disease or cancer, it is likely that our best chance for successful treatment of Alzheimer’s is at the earliest stages of the disease process,” according to Dr. Sperling, whose work represents a critical first step to such early treatment—discovering the link between the disease process and the emergence of clinical symptoms. Dr. Sperling’s work was featured in the Emmy-winning HBO documentary, “The Alzheimer’s Project--Momentum in Science.”
