Alzheimer’s
What are you thinking as you sit on the old couch?
Do you realize you sit there every day?
What do you feel, what’s going on in your mind?
Do you know that day after day has become routine? Are subjects you wish to talk about hard to find?
When trying to recall what happened, you look around and stare,
And when you ask how I am, I tell you what sports I play,
And how I can drive, and my grades in school, and I repeatedly tell you about my life.
You then nod your head and smile, like you do every day.
I want to make you happy and spend as much time with you as I can,
But it’s not that easy to see you this way and I can’t bear it anymore.
Does it ever occur to you that we want to help and we care?
Do you even know you have a disease, an incurable one?
Do you know that the people that love you are still there?
Does it bother you that you don’t know what others are talking about?
Are you ever sad, or scared, or even happy?
Do you miss doing things you used to do?
I know that you may not remember me spending time here,
But maybe you will feel happy, and hopefully something in your mind will break through.
