So why is it that so many cyclists eat Pop Tarts?
Answer:Sure...we've all secretly bought a box of these tasty treats. But, did you know they are often supplied at the pit stops for some serious long distance events?
Pop-Tarts are very close in formulation as many trendy energy bars. They are not for people that are gluten intolerant. But, if you can eat products with wheat, they are generally easy on the stomach, tasty, and provide the quick energy you need. A very casual poll shows that brown sugar cinnamon is the hands down favorite. If nuts are an issue for you, check the box - many are made in facilities that do not process products with nuts.
What are some causes of upset stomach when you are riding?
Answer: Well...first we will rule out that you started a ride feeling on the verge of 'sick'!! We want everyone to feel ready to roll when we get together to beat Alzheimer's disease. We are committed! Train only when you are healthy.
But, what is happening when you are out for a ride and suddenly your stomach is feeling less than enthusiastic about continuing?
Generally, dehydration is the main reason. We all know you don't want to go over the top drinking water constantly, but you need to know what your body needs. Many people will begin to feel stomach cramps and nausea when they are dehydrated. You need to remind yourself that it is imperative to drink before you are thirsty. Typically if you are riding in summer weather, you need a water bottle every 30 minutes. Temperature makes a huge difference; intensity must also be considered. We'll re-visit this one in a future question!!
Energy depletion can also cause stomach upset. The body does funny things when it cannot find quickly convertible energy sources. Feeling down right lousy is one of them! As mentioned above, you need to eat before you feel hungry. Hey....the whole Pop-Tart thing is making more sense!! |
